About Kalydeco
Kalydeco is a prescription medicine.
What it is used for
Kalydeco should only be prescribed by a doctor with experience in the treatment of cystic fibrosis.
How it is used
Kalydeco can only be obtained with a prescription. The dose and formulation depend on the patient’s age and body weight. The dose of Kalydeco may need to be adjusted if the patient is also taking a type of medicine called a ‘moderate or strong CYP3A inhibitor’, such as certain antibiotics or medicines for fungal infections; children aged 1 to 6 months who are taking this type of medicine should not use Kalydeco. The dose may also need to be adjusted in patients over 6 months old with reduced liver function. Infants aged 1 to 6 months with reduced liver function should not use Kalydeco.
How it works
Cystic fibrosis is caused by mutations in the CFTR gene. The active substance in Kalydeco, ivacaftor, improves the activity of the defective CFTR protein. This makes mucus and digestive juices less thick, thereby helping to relieve symptoms of the disease.
