About SYMDEKO

Symdeko is a prescription medication containing the active ingredients ivacaftor and tezacaftor, used in combination with ivacaftor. It is designed to treat cystic fibrosis (CF) in patients aged 12 years and older who have two copies of the F508del mutation in the CFTR gene or who have one copy of the F508del mutation in the CFTR gene and one copy of the G551D mutation in the CFTR gene.

Active Ingredient & Action

The active ingredients in Symdeko, ivacaftor and tezacaftor, work together to improve the function of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. Ivacaftor is a CFTR potentiator that helps to open the CFTR protein, allowing chloride ions to pass through and thin the mucus, making it easier to clear from the lungs. Tezacaftor is a CFTR corrector that helps to restore the function of the CFTR protein, allowing it to reach the cell surface and function properly.

Important Notes

Symdeko should be taken orally with fat-containing food. Patients should be monitored for signs of liver damage, including fatigue, loss of appetite, and jaundice. Patients with a history of liver disease should be closely monitored while taking Symdeko. The most common side effects of Symdeko include headache, nausea, and dizziness.
