Active Ingredient & Action

KADCYLA contains the active ingredient trastuzumab emtansine, which is a monoclonal antibody-drug conjugate. Trastuzumab emtansine consists of trastuzumab, a monoclonal antibody that selectively binds to the extracellular domain of the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), and emtansine, a microtubule inhibitor that is a derivative of maytansine. The binding of trastuzumab to HER2 on the surface of cancer cells delivers the emtansine payload directly to the cells, resulting in cell death.
