Product Overview
About XOLAIR
XOLAIR is a prescription medication used for the treatment of moderate to severe persistent asthma in patients 12 years of age and older who have a positive skin test for house dust mites and whose symptoms are inadequately controlled with inhaled corticosteroids. It is also used for the treatment of chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives) in adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older.
Key Benefits & Uses
- Treatment of moderate to severe persistent asthma in patients with a positive skin test for house dust mites
- Treatment of chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives) in adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older
Active Ingredient & Action
XOLAIR contains the active ingredient omalizumab, a recombinant DNA-derived humanized IgG1 monoclonal antibody that selectively binds to human immunoglobulin E (IgE). By binding to IgE, omalizumab reduces the levels of free IgE in the blood, thereby reducing the symptoms of asthma and chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Important Notes
XOLAIR is administered via subcutaneous injection every 2 or 4 weeks, depending on the patient's weight and IgE levels. It is essential to follow the recommended dosing schedule and to monitor IgE levels regularly. Patients should be closely monitored for signs of anaphylaxis, and XOLAIR should be discontinued if such symptoms occur. Additionally, patients should be advised to carry an epinephrine auto-injector with them at all times.
