About TRISEPTOL

TRISEPTOL is a combined antibacterial agent that exhibits a bactericidal effect. The effectiveness of the drug is based on the synergistic interaction of two active components: sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim.

Composition

The active substances of the drug are sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. TRISEPTOL is available in two dosages: tablets of 400 mg/80 mg and 100 mg/20 mg, respectively. Excipients include potato starch, croscarmellose sodium, colloidal anhydrous silica, calcium stearate, and povidone.

Indications

The drug is prescribed for the treatment of infections caused by microorganisms sensitive to it, in cases where the benefit of therapy outweighs the potential risks. It is used for diseases of the ENT organs and respiratory tract, such as sinusitis, otitis media, bronchitis, pneumonia (including cases caused by Pneumocystis carinii), pharyngitis, and tonsillitis.

TRISEPTOL is effective for infections of the urinary system (cystitis, pyelonephritis, urethritis, prostatitis) and chancroid. It is also used for intestinal infections, including typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, shigellosis, traveler's diarrhea, and cholera. Additionally, the drug is used for osteomyelitis, brucellosis, nocardiosis, and actinomycosis.

Pharmacological properties

The mechanism of action of the drug consists of blocking two consecutive stages of folic acid biosynthesis, which leads to the inhibition of nucleic acid and protein formation in bacteria. Sulfamethoxazole, through competitive inhibition, prevents the use of para-aminobenzoic acid by blocking dihydrofolate synthetase.

Trimethoprim selectively inhibits the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, which converts dihydrofolic acid into tetrahydrofolic acid. This action is selective because the affinity of trimethoprim for the bacterial enzyme is significantly higher than for the human one.
