About TRIMEK
TRIMEK is an antibacterial drug, the active substance of which is ceftriaxone. The agent belongs to a group of antibiotics used to combat a wide spectrum of bacterial infections in adults and children, including newborns.
Composition
One vial of the drug contains 1000 mg of ceftriaxone (in the form of sodium salt).
Indications
The drug is prescribed for the treatment of bacterial meningitis, community-acquired and hospital-acquired pneumonia, acute otitis media, and abdominal infections. It is used for complicated urinary tract infections (including pyelonephritis), as well as infections of the bones, joints, skin, and soft tissues. TRIMEK is also effective in the treatment of gonorrhea, syphilis, bacterial endocarditis, and disseminated Lyme borreliosis.
Additionally, the agent is used for the treatment of exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, prophylaxis of infections before surgery, and therapy for patients with neutropenic fever. The drug may be prescribed for bacteremia associated with the aforementioned conditions. If necessary, TRIMEK is used in combination with other antibiotics.
Pharmacological properties
The mechanism of action of ceftriaxone consists of inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. The drug binds to penicillin-binding proteins, which stops peptidoglycan biosynthesis, leading to the destruction and death of the bacterial cell.
Resistance of microorganisms to the drug may occur due to the action of beta-lactamases, decreased affinity of penicillin-binding proteins, impermeability of the outer bacterial membrane, or the activity of efflux pumps. The susceptibility of pathogens to ceftriaxone is determined based on the minimum inhibitory concentration breakpoints established by EUCAST.
