TEOTARD — prolonged-action capsules containing theophylline.

Composition

Active substance: theophylline. One prolonged-action capsule contains 200 mg of theophylline. Excipients: povidone, anhydrous colloidal silicon dioxide, triethyl citrate, ammonium methacrylate copolymers type A and B, talc. The capsule shell contains gelatin, titanium dioxide (E 171), indigotine (E 132), and quinoline yellow (E 104).

Indications

The drug is used for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchial asthma, pulmonary emphysema, and central sleep apnea syndrome.

Pharmacological properties

Theophylline has a spasmolytic and anti-inflammatory effect, and also has hemodynamic and extrapulmonary effects. It relaxes the smooth muscles of the bronchi, increases airflow through the bronchi, and improves breathing.

Theophylline facilitates the transport of bronchial mucus by enhancing the secretion of mucus and surfactant, and also stimulates the movement of epithelial cilia. The anti-inflammatory effect is associated with the inhibition of T-lymphocyte proliferation, suppression of cytokine secretion, in particular interleukin-2 and tumor necrosis factor, as well as the activity of eosinophils, macrophages, and tissue basophils.

These effects reduce inflammation of the bronchial mucosa. Theophylline also relaxes the smooth muscles of the coronary arteries, blood vessels of the muscles and kidneys, as well as the muscles of the uterus, the cardioesophageal sphincter, and the bile ducts.
