About TAZPEN 4.5
TAZPEN 4.5 is a combined antibacterial drug containing piperacillin and tazobactam. The agent belongs to the broad-spectrum antibiotics and is used for the treatment of severe bacterial infections in adults and children aged 2 years and older.
Composition
The active substances of the drug are piperacillin (in the form of sodium salt) and tazobactam (in the form of sodium salt). One vial with a dosage of 4.5 g contains 4 g of piperacillin and 0.5 g of tazobactam.
Indications
For adults and children aged 12 and older, the drug is prescribed for severe pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections (including pyelonephritis), complicated intra-abdominal infections, as well as complications of the skin and soft tissues, including diabetic foot. The agent is also used for bacteremia associated with the aforementioned infections and for fever in patients with neutropenia of bacterial origin.
For children aged 2 to 12 years, indications include complicated intra-abdominal infections and fever associated with neutropenia caused by bacteria. When prescribing the drug, official guidelines regarding the use of antibiotics should be followed.
Pharmacological properties
Piperacillin is a semi-synthetic penicillin antibiotic that blocks the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. Tazobactam acts as a beta-lactamase inhibitor, which allows for the expansion of the spectrum of activity of piperacillin against bacteria that are usually resistant to penicillins and cephalosporins.
The effectiveness of the drug depends on the time during which the plasma concentration of piperacillin exceeds the minimum inhibitory concentration. Resistance to the drug may occur due to the inactivation of piperacillin by beta-lactamases that are not inhibited by tazobactam.
