About SULFA-Q
SULFA-Q is a prescription medication containing the active ingredients Pyrimethamine and Sulfadoxine. It is used to treat and prevent malaria, a serious and sometimes life-threatening disease caused by Plasmodium parasites.
Key Benefits & Uses
- Treatment and prevention of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, and Plasmodium malariae.
- Combination therapy for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria.
- Prophylaxis for travelers to areas where malaria is endemic.
Active Ingredient & Action
Pyrimethamine and Sulfadoxine in SULFA-Q work synergistically to inhibit the growth of Plasmodium parasites. Pyrimethamine acts by inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase, an enzyme necessary for the synthesis of tetrahydrofolate, while Sulfadoxine inhibits dihydropteroate synthase, another enzyme involved in folate synthesis. This dual action leads to the inhibition of parasite growth and replication.
Important Notes
SULFA-Q should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional. It is essential to complete the full treatment course as prescribed to ensure effective treatment and prevention of malaria. Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to SULFA-Q or its components should not use this medication. Regular monitoring of liver function and complete blood counts is recommended during treatment.
