About LOPEDIUM
LOPEDIUM® contains loperamide hydrochloride for rapid symptomatic relief of diarrhoea.
Composition
2 mg loperamide hydrochloride per tablet.
Indications
Symptomatic acute diarrhoea in adults and adolescents from 12 years; acute IBS-related diarrhoea in adults from 18 years after medical diagnosis.
Pharmacological properties
Loperamide binds opioid receptors in the intestinal wall, reducing acetylcholine and prostaglandin release, slowing transit and increasing fluid absorption; it also increases anal sphincter tone. Oral bioavailability is about 0.3% due to first-pass metabolism.
