ФЕНОБАРБІТАЛ IC is a medicinal product belonging to the group of barbituric acid derivatives. The preparation has pronounced anticonvulsant and sedative effects, and also influences the activity of the body's enzymatic systems.

Composition

Each tablet contains 100 mg of the active substance — phenobarbital.

Indications

The preparation is used in epilepsy, chorea, and spastic paralysis. It is also indicated for spasms of peripheral arteries, eclampsia, and hemolytic disease of the newborn.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics: Phenobarbital reduces neuronal excitability in zones of epileptic activity and suppresses the activity of motor centers of the cerebral cortex and subcortex. The preparation increases the level of the inhibitory mediator GABA in the central nervous system and weakens the action of excitatory amino acids. Additionally, it acts as an enzyme inducer, increasing the activity of the monooxygenase system.

Pharmacokinetics: The drug is absorbed slowly but almost completely (80%) in the gastrointestinal tract, distributing evenly in tissues. The maximum blood concentration is observed after 1–2 hours, and the therapeutic effect develops over 30–60 minutes. The elimination half-life ranges from 2 to 4 days in adults and up to 7 days in newborns.
