About СУЛЬФАСАЛАЗИН

СУЛЬФАСАЛАЗИН is a medicinal product used to treat ulcerative colitis and certain forms of rheumatoid arthritis.

Composition

The active substance is sulfasalazine. One tablet contains 500 mg of sulfasalazine. Excipients include: povidone, pre-gelatinized starch, magnesium stearate, anhydrous colloidal silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide (E 171), yellow iron oxide (E 172), talc, triethyl citrate, macrogol 6000, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and methacrylic acid copolymer type A.

Indications

The preparation is used to treat mild or moderate ulcerative colitis, as additional therapy for severe ulcerative colitis, and to prolong remission between acute attacks of the disease. СУЛЬФАСАЛАЗИН is prescribed to patients with rheumatoid arthritis if salicylates or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have proven insufficiently effective or not tolerated. The preparation is also used to treat juvenile rheumatoid arthritis with polyarticular syndrome in cases where salicylates or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have proven insufficiently effective.

Pharmacological Properties

Sulfasalazine accumulates in the connective tissue of the intestine and releases 5-aminosalicylic acid and sulfapyridine. 5-aminosalicylic acid has an anti-inflammatory effect, mainly by locally inhibiting cyclooxygenase and lipooxygenase in the intestinal wall, which reduces the formation of inflammation mediators. Sulfapyridine has an antimicrobial effect against diplococci, streptococci, gonococci, and intestinal bacillus, reduces systemic inflammation, and inhibits the action of natural killer cells and the transformation of leukocytes.
