SITAGLIPTIN is a prescription medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of medications known as dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. SITAGLIPTIN works by increasing the levels of incretin hormones, which help the body produce more insulin and decrease the amount of glucose produced by the liver.
Key Benefits & Uses
- Treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults, either alone or in combination with other medications.
- Improvement of glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes.
- Reduction of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.
Active Ingredient & Action
The active ingredient in SITAGLIPTIN is SITAGLIPTIN (SITAGLIPTIN PHOSPHATE MONOHYDRATE), a DPP-4 inhibitor that works by increasing the levels of incretin hormones, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). These hormones help the body produce more insulin and decrease the amount of glucose produced by the liver, leading to improved glycemic control.
Important Notes
SITAGLIPTIN is not indicated for the treatment of type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. It is also not recommended for patients with a history of pancreatitis. Patients taking SITAGLIPTIN should be monitored for signs of pancreatitis, such as abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.
