VICTOZA
Product Overview
About VICTOZA
VICTOZA is a prescription medication containing the active ingredient Liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity, including weight management in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher, or in adults with a BMI of 27 kg/m² or higher with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol.
Key Benefits & Uses
- Improves glycemic control and reduces HbA1c levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
- Supports weight loss and maintenance in obese adults.
- Reduces the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with established cardiovascular disease.
Active Ingredient & Action
Liraglutide works by mimicking the action of the natural hormone GLP-1, which helps to regulate blood sugar levels and appetite. It binds to GLP-1 receptors in the pancreas, stomach, and brain, stimulating the release of insulin and suppressing the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar levels. This leads to improved glucose metabolism, reduced appetite, and increased feelings of fullness.
Important Notes
VICTOZA is available in pre-filled pens for subcutaneous injection. It should be used in conjunction with diet and exercise to achieve optimal results. Patients should be monitored regularly for signs of pancreatitis, thyroid C-cell tumors, and hypersensitivity reactions. VICTOZA is not recommended for patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2.
