PROTOPIC is a topical immunosuppressant medication containing the active ingredient Tacrolimus. It is used to treat moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults and children aged 2 years and older.

Active Ingredient & Action

Tacrolimus, the active ingredient in PROTOPIC, is a calcineurin inhibitor that works by suppressing the immune system's response in the skin. It binds to the immunophilin protein FKBP-12, forming a complex that inhibits calcineurin, a protein phosphatase involved in the activation of T-lymphocytes. This leads to a decrease in the production of inflammatory cytokines and a reduction in the symptoms of atopic dermatitis.
