LAMOTRIGINE is an antiepileptic medication used to treat certain types of seizures and epilepsy. It is also used to treat bipolar disorder, specifically to prevent or reduce the frequency of depressive episodes.

Active Ingredient & Action

LAMOTRIGINE is a phenyltriazine derivative that acts as a voltage-sensitive sodium channel blocker. It stabilizes neuronal membranes and suppresses post-tetanic potentiation at synapses. This results in a reduction of the release of excitatory neurotransmitters and a decrease in the propagation of seizure activity.

Important Notes

LAMOTRIGINE may cause serious side effects, including severe skin rash, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and multi-organ hypersensitivity reactions. It may also cause dizziness, drowsiness, and blurred vision. Patients should be advised to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until they know how the medication affects them. Regular blood tests may be necessary to monitor liver function and blood cell counts.
