Product Overview
About SYMTUZA
Symtuza is a prescription medication used to treat HIV-1 infection in adults. It is a fixed-dose combination of four antiretroviral drugs: tenofovir alafenamide (tenofovir alafenamide hemifumarate), emtricitabine, darunavir (darunavir ethanolate), and cobicistat.
Key Benefits & Uses
- Treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults.
- Combination therapy for HIV-1 infection, used in conjunction with other antiretroviral medications.
- Reduction of viral load and improvement of immune function in HIV-1 infected individuals.
Active Ingredient & Action
Symtuza contains four active ingredients that work together to inhibit the replication of HIV-1 virus. Tenofovir alafenamide (tenofovir alafenamide hemifumarate) is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI) that inhibits the activity of reverse transcriptase, an enzyme essential for viral replication. Emtricitabine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that also inhibits reverse transcriptase. Darunavir (darunavir ethanolate) is a protease inhibitor (PI) that blocks the protease enzyme, preventing the maturation of viral particles. Cobicistat is a cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A) inhibitor that increases the plasma concentrations of darunavir and other antiretroviral medications.
