About Braftovi
Braftovi is a medicine that can only be obtained with a prescription and treatment should be started and supervised by a doctor experienced in using cancer medicines.
How it is used
Braftovi is available as capsules to be taken by mouth once daily and the dose depends on the condition being treated. If the patient experiences severe side effects, the dose may be reduced or treatment may be stopped temporarily. The dose of the other medicine, binimetinib or cetuximab, may also be reduced. If treatment with the other medicine is stopped, treatment with Braftovi must also be stopped. Treatment with Braftovi can last for as long as the patient benefits from it and does not have unacceptable side effects.
How it works
In cancer cells with a BRAF V600 mutation, an abnormal form of the protein BRAF is present, which switches on another protein called MEK that stimulates cell division. This causes cancer cells to divide uncontrollably, leading to cancer growth. The active substance in Braftovi, encorafenib, works by blocking the abnormal BRAF protein, preventing it from activating cell division and thereby slowing down the growth and spread of the cancer.
