Active Ingredient & Action
ETHINYL ESTRADIOL, a synthetic estrogen, works by inhibiting the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, which in turn reduces the production of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland. LEVONORGESTREL, a synthetic progestin, works by thickening the cervical mucus, preventing sperm penetration, and thinning the uterine lining, making it difficult for a fertilized egg to implant.
